Solar Breakfast for Financiers
In October 2012, ASI held a joint event with ARENA and Baker & McKenzie, to highlight research underway to help overcome the technical and financial barriers to solar deployment. CSIRO's Dr Peter Coppin presented an introduction to solar energy forecasting – an area of research that is vital to the widespread uptake of solar. You can view his presentation here.

Address to Federal Parliamentarians
In August 2012, Chair of ASI's Board of Directors Jenny Goddard presented ASI's portfolio highlights to Federal Parliamentarians at a breakfast in Canberra. This included an overview of ASI's portfolio as well as some particular case studies.

China – Threat or Opportunity?
Professor Stuart Wenham provided a unique insight into Australia’s opportunity to continue generating and owning solar intellectual property to complement China’s commercialisation strengths in a keynote address to Federal Parliamentarians in August.
Professor Wenham is the Director of the Photovoltaics Centre of Excellence at the University of NSW and the Chief Technology Officer at the world’s largest solar cell manufacturer, Suntech-Power.

Three Minute Solar Thesis Challenge
Eleven researchers from ASI’s Skills Development Program took part in our Three Minute Solar Thesis Challenge at the Australian National University in July 2012.
Participants had three minutes and three PowerPoint slides to convince an eminent panel of judges and the audience of their project’s merits.
Jonathon Dore from the University of New South Wales took out best PhD presentation and the People’s Choice Award, and Dr Kean Yap from Charles Darwin University was awarded best Postdoctoral Fellow presentation.

Concentrating Solar Power Research Showcase
In July 2012, ASI hosted a Concentrating Solar Power Research Showcase at the Australian National University as part of our Knowledge Sharing Series.
The event featured the findings of an ASI commissioned report, Realising the Potential of Concentrating Solar Power in Australia (PDF 3.4MB), undertaken by Dr Keith Lovegrove from IT Power.

ASI Solar Energy Forecasting Workshop
ASI hosted a Solar energy Forecasting Workshop on 20 April 2011 to map a plan for solar forecasting in Australia to enable large scale solar deployment. It included an overview of potential gaps and requirements, presentations from researchers leading solar forecasting and key related activities in Australia and a discussion on priorities for research and development, including the proposed Australian Solar Energy Forecasting System.
